CLAT stands for Common Law Admission Test. It is an all India entrance examination conducted by the National Law Schools | Universities for admissions to their under-graduate and post graduate degree programmes (LL.B & LL.M). The CLAT exam is conducted on rotation, based upon the order of their establishment, by 21 National Law Universities (NLUs). ‘Consortium of Law, Bangalore’ is the designated body which assists the particular NLU with nuances of conducting test.

The law entrance exams in India are conducted at two levels i.e. national level (candidates irrespective of region or nationality can apply and appear), and at the state level (only the candidates who are locals of the state can apply and appear for the examination). Generally, the law aspirants opt for both national as well as a state-level examination of their state to improve chances of admission in a top law school in India. Therefore, for the convenience of the candidates we have shared the detailed features of top law entrance exams in India

The CLAT Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) has released the latest eligibility criteria for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2020 along with the applications. Candidates, who plan to appear for the exam to get admission in five-year integrated LLB courses or LLM course should ensure they meet the CLAT eligibility criteria. The application process of CLAT 2020 has begun on January 1 and the registration can be done in online mode only. Candidates have to fill the details such as educational qualification, date of birth, and other details in the form and it should be as per the eligibility requirements only. 

All law schools in India accepting CLAT follow the eligibility criteria mentioned by the CLAT Consortium to offer admissions. Moreover, the eligibility criteria for legal education in India are prescribed by the Bar Council of India (BCI). Therefore, the CLAT 2020 eligibility criteria remain the same as earlier and candidates can check below the requirements for their courses:

CLAT 2020 Eligibility Criteria for Undergraduate Law Courses

Parameters that candidates need to meet in order to fulfil CLAT eligibility criteria for undergraduate (UG ) level law courses are mentioned below:

Educational qualification

  • Candidates should clear Class 12thwith minimum 45% marks (applicable for candidates belonging to General/ Other Backward Class (OBC)/ Person with Disability (PwD)/ Non-Resident Indian (NRI)/ Person of Indian Origin (PIO)/ Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) category)
  • Candidates should clear Class 12thwith minimum 40% marks (applicable for candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC)/ Scheduled Tribe (ST) category)
  • Candidates appearing for their Class 12thboard examinations are also eligible to apply for CLAT 2020 exam. However, such candidates need to produce the proof of passing Class 12th or equivalent exam at the time of admission. Candidates unable to produce the evidence shall forfeit their right of admission through CLAT 2020 exam

CLAT age limit

  • There is no upper age limit to appear for the CLAT 2020 exam. This means that candidates belonging to any age group can apply for the law entrance exam
  • The age will be an important factor when there will be a tie in marks of two or more candidates.

CLAT 2020 Eligibility for Postgraduate Law Courses

Postgraduate (PG) law programme in which candidates can secure admission through CLAT  exam is LLM (Master of Law).

Basic criteria that candidates need to fulfil in order to meet CLAT eligibility criteria for LLM course are mentioned below:

Educational qualification

  • Candidates (belonging to General/ OBC/ PwD/ NRI/ PIO/ OCI category) should possess an LLB or equivalent degree with minimum 50% aggregate marks
  • Candidates (belonging to SC/ ST category) should possess an LLB or equivalent degree with minimum 45% aggregate marks
  • Candidates appearing for the final year examination of their qualifying degree are also eligible to apply for CLAT

CLAT age limit

  • There is no upper age limit to apply for CLAT PG exam

 

 

CLAT Question Paper Format 2023  

The CLAT question paper for UG courses contains 150 multiple-choice questions of 150 marks. On the other hand, the CLAT question paper for LLM courses contains both objective and subjective questions. Importance of Solving CLAT Question Papers

Solving CLAT sample papers/question papers is beneficial as it gives the look and feel of the actual exam and develop the aptitude for solving questions in a given format and time duration. Tips to Attempt Questions in CLAT English Language Section

  • Try to read a passage within five to seven minutes
  • Try to identify the main point been made in the passage
  • Try to extract information in the form of Who, What, Why, When and Where from the passage
  • Pay close attention to the wordings used in the passage
  • Ensure that you read all the four options before answering a given question

 

 

AILET Exam 

The only law entrance exam in India conducted and accepted by the NLU Delhi. The UG and PG courses offered at NLU Delhi are BA LLB (Hons) and LLM courses. Candidates could apply for AILET in online mode. 

  • Exam timings - 10 am - 11.30 am
  • Subjects - English, General Knowledge and Current Affairs, Legal Aptitude, Reasoning, and Mathematics
  • Total questions - 150 questions
  • Total marks - 150 marks 

SLAT or SET Law

The law entrance exam, SLAT is conducted by SIU Pune - Symbiosis International (Deemed University) for admission to undergraduate courses offered at its four law schools in Symbiosis Law School (SLS), PuneSLS HyderabadSLS Nagpur and SLS Noida

  • Subjects - Analytical Reasoning, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension and GK
  • Total questions - 60 questions
  • Total marks - 60 marks 

LSAT India 

The law entrance exam, LSAT India is conducted by Law School Admission Council (LSAC) for admission to undergraduate as well as postgraduate law schools in India. Initially, Pearson VUE conducted LSAT India examination on behalf of LSAC. However, since 2020 LSAC has setup LSAC Global - Discover Law for conducting and managing LSAT India entrance exam. The LSAT India application process is provided at the official website - discoverlaw.in. Below are some crucial information about the exam:

  • Exam duration - 2 hours 20 minutes
  • Subjects - Analytical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning 1 & 2 and Reading Comprehension
  • Total questions - 92 questions

MH CET Law Exam 

The entrance exam is conducted for five-year integrated LLB as well as three-year LLB courses offered at the Maharashtra state universities and law colleges. The law entrance exam is conducted at a state level by the Common Entrance Test Cell (CET Cell) Maharashtra. As per the exam pattern of MHCET Law, the exam is held in computer-based test mode for a duration of two hours. Know key features of MHCET Law as under:

  • Subjects - English, Logical and Analytical Reasoning, General Knowledge including Current Affairs, Mathematical Aptitude and Legal Aptitude

The three-year LLB entrance exam is conducted by DU - Delhi University for admission to its three law centres i.e. Campus Law CentreLaw Centre - I and Law Centre - II. The exam is held in a computer-based test mode across 18 test cities in India. The key features of DU LLB entrance exam are as under: 

  • Exam duration - Two hours
  • Subjects - English including Comprehension, Analytical Ability, Legal Awareness and Aptitude, and General Knowledge 
  • Total questions - 100 questions
  • Total marks - 400 marks
